Prescription medications such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Dexadrine are stimulants. Effects of stimulant use include an increased alertness, attention, and energy along with a sense of euphoria. Stimulants can be addictive.

Stimulants increase blood pressure and heart rate, constrict blood vessels, and increase blood glucose and breathing. There is also the potential for heart attacks or lethal seizures. Taking high doses of some stimulants repeatedly over a short time can lead to feelings of hostility or paranoia. Additionally, taking high doses of a stimulant may result in dangerously high body temperatures and an irregular heartbeat.

Assumptions
In order to reduce alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by youth, a community-wide intervention is needed.

To ensure that the intervention will be relevant to youth, they must be involved in planning and implementation.

Current community norms are accepting of alcohol, marijuana and other drug use in the community.

Reduced availability of alcohol will reduce alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by youth.

Use of alcohol by youth can be reduced through:

  • An outreach campaign that addresses alcohol, marijuana and other drug use in youth
  • Education about the penalties of selling and/or supplying alcohol to underage youth
  • More stringent monitoring of sales of alcohol to underage youth
Unstructured time leads to experimentation with alcohol, marijuana and other drugs by youth.

Protective factors decrease the risk of alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by youth.

Risk factors increase the risk of alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by youth.

Providing a variety of youth programs will
  • increase protective factors and decrease risk factors
  • reduce unstructured time
  • reduce alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by youth
Increasing parental understanding of protective and risk factors will lead to increased protective factors and reduced risk factors in their children.
