Youth tend to have a lot of questions about drugs and alcohol. It is common to wonder and worry about a friend's drug or alcohol use. You may even wonder about your own. The following questions were written by recovering addicts/alcoholics. If you are not sure about drug/alcohol usage with you or your friends, read the questions below and answer them honestly.

  • Do you ever use alone?
  • Do you get drunk or stoned on a regular basis?
  • Do you have a lot of hangovers or blackouts where you forget what you did while drunk or high?
  • Have you ever stolen drugs/alcohol or stolen to obtain drugs/alcohol?
  • Do you regularly use a drug or alcohol when you wake up or when you go to bed?
  • Have you ever thought you couldn’t have fun unless drunk or stoned?
  • Have you ever taken one drug to overcome the effects of another?
  • Have you ever used a drug without knowing what it was or what it would do to you?
  • Has your job or school performance ever suffered from your drug/alcohol use?
  • Have you ever been arrested as a result of using drugs/alcohol?
  • Have you ever lied about what or how much you use?
  • Have you ever tried to stop or control your using?
  • Have you ever been in a jail, hospital, or drug rehabilitation center because of your using?
  • Does using interfere with your sleeping or eating?
  • Do you feel it is impossible for you to live without drugs/alcohol?
  • Have you ever manipulated or lied to a doctor to obtain prescription drugs?
  • Is your drug/alcohol use making life at home difficult?
  • Have you ever felt defensive, guilty, or ashamed about your using?
  • Do you think a lot about drugs/alcohol?
  • Has using affected your sexual relationships?
  • Have you ever used drugs/alcohol because of emotional pain or stress?
  • Have you ever overdosed on any drugs/alcohol?
  • Do you continue to use despite negative consequences?
  • Do you think you might have a drug/alcohol problem?

If you or a friend needs help with an alcohol or drug-related problem – take action!  Parents, teachers, ministers, school counselors, and other trusted adults can help.
