Copper Country
Alcohol Facts
Not all kids in the Copper
Country drink, yet all teens are at risk. A
recent survey conducted in Houghton and Baraga
counties demonstrates that many students are
drinking or have drunk alcohol in their
lifetime. Some of those students who are
drinking can even be considered “heavy”
drinkers. More importantly, many students don’t
believe that their parents will find out that
they are drinking. According to survey results,
they are probably right. A lot of Copper
Country parents don’t believe their teen is
drinking—they believe “it’s somebody else’s
kid.” The question you have to ask is “do you
really know?”
The tables below show alcohol lifetime use
rates, 30-day use rates, and heavy drinking
rates for Copper Country students. Lifetime use
rates reflect the number of students that have
used alcohol (beer, wine, wine coolers and
liquor) in their lifetime. 30-day use rates
refer to how many students drank alcohol in the
past month. Heavy drinking rates indicate how
many students have had five or more drinks in a
row in a two-week period. |

Local teens know how and where to get alcohol.
According to a recent survey, 80% of 8th grade
students, 90% of 10th grade students and 94% of
12th grade students state that alcohol is easy
to get. Where do teens get alcohol? The three
most common places are from home, a friend's
home and from older siblings, relatives or
friends. |
